The Borrowers are little people who live in our houses under the floorboards and are responsible for things that go missing in our homes as they borrow items to survive. Teenage Borrower Arietty Clock is keen to leave her home under the floor, shared with her parents Pod and Homily. When she secretly explores Granny Driver's house above she is discovered by grandson James but his Grandma contacts Professor Mildeye who wants to capture and exhibit the Borrowers to prove to the world his theory about 'Homo Sapien Redactus' is true.
